Dalit men tonsured, forced to crawl over cow smuggling allegations in Odisha

WHO certifies malaria elimination in Sri Lanka

Eliminating Malaria in Sri Lanka - The Reach Alliance

Date: March 27, 2025

The World Health Organization on March 27, 2025, officially certified Sri Lanka as malaria-free, marking a major public health achievement for the country. Sri Lanka reported zero indigenous malaria cases for five consecutive years, down from over 200,000 cases annually in the 1980s. President Ranil Wickremesinghe said the certification validates years of community surveillance, preventive spraying, and rapid response strategies. WHO urged continued vigilance to prevent imported cases triggering local transmission again. Sri Lanka becomes the second country in South Asia, after Maldives, to achieve this feat.
